Jon Boden

About

Jon Boden is best known is the lead singer and main arranger of the progressive folk juggernaut Bellowhead. After 12 years, a quarter of a million album sales, seven singles on the Radio 2 playlist and having sold out hundreds of venues throughout the land, including the Royal Albert Hall, Jon announced in 2015 that he wanted to move on. The rest of the band decided not to continue without him. Bellowhead played their final gig on May 1st 2016.

As a total contrast to the 11 piece Bellowhead, autumn 2016 saw Jon launch his first ever solo tour. His solo career goes back to 2006 with the release of his album ‘Painted Lady’ (re-released in 2016), followed by the critically lauded ‘Songs From The Floodplain’ which lead to him being named Folk Singer of The Year at the 2009 BBC Folk Awards. He has toured several times since then with his own band The Remnant Kings but this was the first time he had performed entirely solo.

Widely respected as an interpreter of traditional song, as part of Bellowhead, Spiers & Boden and solo, Jon has won 11 BBC folk awards, more than any other artist.

In 2017 Jon releases his new album, Afterglow, on Hudson Records. A self penned follow up to ‘Songs from the Floodplain’, the album features a full band including string and brass sections.  Afterglow will be premiered at Cambridge Folk Festival 2017 and toured with the full band in November 2017.

“I am over the moon to be joining the Hudson Records family! The folk scene has a long, noble history of brilliant independent record labels propelling the scene onwards and upwards, and I am sure Hudson will become the new torchbearer for that movement.”

Afterglow

Afterglow follows on from Boden's 2009 post-apocalyptic concept-album masterpiece ‘Songs From The Floodplain’. Whereas Floodplain was largely rural in setting, Afterglow plunges the listener into the heaving chaos of a dystopian street carnival, an Orwellian mashup of Bonfire Night and Diwali. Through his unique songwriting Boden tells the story of two star-crossed lovers trying to find each other amongst a backdrop of decaying buildings, burning oil drums, home-made fireworks, tribal rioting and Bacchanalian revelry.
