6. Ostrea edulis"Written and recorded in Assynt on the shore of Inverkirkaig, this EP is the outset of a new solo project I am working on exploring the life of native oysters Ostrea edulis. Oysters have played countless roles across thousands of years from Greek mythology to a common food staple before becoming the modern delicacy of today.
Oysters are often found in estuaries and thrive in brackish water, in the same conditions where you will likely find a halocline.
Although oysters are grown in solitude when farmed, in the wild they form reefs growing onto each other, old shells and past ancestors to build vast reefs in the intertidal zone.
They are protandrous hermaphrodites meaning they begin life as male and later change to female, a trait that is surprisingly common throughout the natural world. Existing for hundreds of thousands of years, persisting through an ever changing world, oysters are the perfect example of the animal kingdom's beautiful disregard for conformity.”
