Happy New Year! We hope you’ve had a great start to 2026. We’ve got so much new music for you that we can’t wait to share it all. We’ll be celebrating 10 years of Hudson Records this year and what better way to start than with a new single from the fabulous Emily Portman who was with us back when we set out in 2016 with our first ever release from The Furrow Collective.

The first single Turn Again from Emily’s upcoming album Dominion of Spells is OUT NOW! A thoughtful exploration of parenthood, metamorphosis, and the mythic imagination of childhood, Turn Again weaves intimate storytelling with rich, atmospheric instrumentation.

Written for Emily's son, “a master shapeshifter”, the song draws inspiration from the folk ballad Tam Lin, where the enchanted hero asks his lover to “hold me fast and fear me not” as he transforms through fearsome shapes. Portman reframes this image through the lens of motherhood, reflecting on the delicate dance of holding children close through constant change while learning, ultimately, to let them go.

Turn Again stands as a poignant meditation on the ways children transform before our eyes, and the quiet, continual ways they transform us in return.

If you missed it in the run up to the holidays, we announced the kickstarter campaign for Emily Portman’s new record Dominion of Spells. We’ve already been overwhelmed by the support for the new record, but we still have a way to go to make our target. We’ve got just 2 weeks left so if you are able to help us reach our goal to support the making of this record then we will be eternally grateful!

In the current climate and the age of streaming, the costs of making a record make it incredibly hard for independent artists and small labels like Hudson Records to break even.

Dominion of Spells is Emily’s first solo release in a decade. It follows a heroine’s journey through the woods at midlife, navigating spells of entrapment and liberation in search of a new path and a new skin.
