***NEW DIGITAL EP***

“an English equivalent of the great Irish fiddle player Martin Hayes.” **** The Guardian

“One of the defining English fiddle players of his generation” Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2

Following the release of Sam’s highly acclaimed solo album Escape That in 2022 and after touring it to 33,000 people, supporting Bellowhead on their reunion tour, Sam is now releasing the second in a series of EPs. The first in the series, Solo, was released on Hudson Records in February 2022 and the second, Shapes, is a duo collaboration with Sam’s touring electric guitarist, Louis Campbell.

Shapes was recorded on May 11th 2022 with long-time collaborator Andy Bell at St Martin's church in Stoney Middleton in the Peak District. The music is the result of two days. It was written at Sam’s house on April 14th 2022, expanding on a composing method Sam had previously explored on his 2020 album Unearth Repeat. Using 18th century manuscripts and collections as a springboard, the rough melodic shapes of traditional tunes were followed while ignoring the exact notes, time and key signatures and rhythms. Arrangements were left raw, leaving room to explore while recording in the glorious acoustic of the church’s octagonal nave.

“Working with Louis on this EP was a real joy. He is such an extraordinarily sensitive musician and natural collaborator, the music came extremely quickly. It feels like a seed has been planted and I can’t wait to see what grows from it.' Sam Sweeney

Nominated four times, and winner in 2015, of Musician of The Year BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Sam is a veteran of the mighty Bellowhead, former and inaugural artistic director of the National Folk Youth Ensemble, founder member of the acclaimed instrumental trio Leveret, and a superb instrumentalist at the forefront of the revival in English traditional music. Sam has also recorded and performed with The Full English, Eliza Carthy, Jon Boden & The Remnant Kings, Fay Hield & The Hurricane Party, Emily Portman, Martin Carthy, as well as his own critically acclaimed show Made In The Great War.

Louis Campbell, “a talent to watch” (Sunday Times) joined Sam’s band aged 19, while still studying at the Royal Northern College of Music under Martin Simpson, Stuart McCallum and Craig Ogden. His duo with fiddle player Owen Spafford released their debut album in 2022, receiving 4 and 5 star reviews from Songlines and RnR magazines and national airplay on BBC Radio 2, 3 and Scotland as well as RTE1.

Shapes is available from all digital music platforms from 5th May 2023, Hudson Records hope to release the series physically when complete. The first single from Shapes ‘Shape #2 (Gmin)’ is released as a single on 23rd April 2023.
