We’re excited to have been invited by Hudson to tell you about our new lunar-themed record We Know by the Moon which was released on Hudson Records at the end of November. We’ve just had a fantastic time out on the road and it’s been great to meet some of you on our travels.
We’ve worked with Andy at Hudson since the very start of The Furrow Collective and consider him our ‘fifth furrow’, so it was brilliant to be able to make a record together 10 years after we first formed. It feels like a particularly big achievement to get to this point as we were thwarted so many times by Covid, having had to cancel recording multiple times because of band members falling ill. But we hope you’ll agree it was worth the wait!
The moon, the stars, darkness and night are threads woven through these new songs. They are songs to be listened to after dark, by candlelight or firelight. The stories of the songs are mostly set by moonlight and the 11 tracks are full of tales of night visiting, ghostly encounters, and the occasional murder. There are songs from England, Scotland and beyond; from 's Fhada Leam an Oidhche Gheamhraidh’, the homesick Gaelic lament of an Isle of Lewis emigrant, to Robert Burns’ ‘O, Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast’, as well as a foray into the German language with Schubert’s ‘Der Leiermann (The Hurdy-Gurdy Man)‘ and an unaccompanied vocal version of ‘Oh Watch the Stars’, that we learnt from a record by The Seeger Sisters.
The beautiful artwork is by May Farrell (Lucy’s mum) and we have recorded a (zoom) conversation with May and the band especially for this newsletter, to give some insight into the songs and drawings. Hudson have made some brilliant bundles including some very special vinyl which makes the most of May’s artwork. Our first single ‘The Moon Shined on my Bed Last Night’ was released on the October full moon (28.10.23) with the complete album released not on a Friday as normal, but on the November full moon, sometimes known as the ‘cold moon’ (27.11.23).
We hope you enjoy We Know by the Moon!
