When putting my mind to the preparation of the Clifftown album in early 2019 I collected around twenty five songs for inclusion, knowing full well the first process was to whittle these down to a manageable amount which could be recorded in the week we had to make the record as a band. Some songs were discarded easily and early while others clung on throughout the recording week only to be culled when we finalised the twelve tracks for the record.
A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton EP represents four songs which didn't quite make the final cut. Some had a strong seaside theme or represented the suburban experience I was trying to capture, like ‘A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton’ and ‘Middle English’, but they didn’t make it to the top of an already overloaded pile. ‘Lady Arabella’ was a local history song about Lady Arabella Stuart and her desperate attempt to escape England via Leigh-on-Sea, near Southend, in 1611. Other songs didn't quite fit the mould and it is often these that get lost over time, so ‘Now, It’s So Quiet’ was a joy to include in this selection.
A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton EP was recorded in the dead days of the New Year 2022 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Nestled in a quiet neighbourhood subdued from Christmas and New Year celebrations (as well as a virus that still threatened) I worked with Helen Bell (violin, viola) and Harriet Bradshaw (cello, piano, backing vocals) over two days. Andy Bell acted as producer capturing the sounds in-between the muted noises of suburbia, which is at is should be for a return to Clifftown.
A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton is a Digital only release available from 3rd June 2022.
