Sean Rogan
London-based singer-songwriter and producer Sean Rogan presents his self-produced album Closing Night: a record shaped by transition, collaboration and a deliberate move toward raw, performance-led recording techniques.
Working with a rotating group of musician friends, Sean moved away from tightly controlled production toward something more instinctive, prioritising live takes, improvisation, and feel.
Featuring songs written over a 2-year period, it tells the story of a period of intense change. After moving to London, Sean began attending traditional folk sessions and playing the banjo, developing a love of live performance, acoustic instruments, and the musical interaction which can sometimes become lost in modern recordings. His debut solo album, Closing Night, reflects this period. Recorded from his bedroom in Greenwich, the album keeps live performance and collaboration at its core, embracing improvisation, cassette recorders, and largely unedited takes, with comping used only when necessary.
Starting with the oldest song, ‘Automobile’, it depicts a gentle, quiet reflection on a breakup. This theme reappears throughout the album in different outfits, painting the non-linear reality of moving on.
The title Closing Night is an almost ironic nod to the search for closure. It marks the end of a relationship, a city, and the feelings left behind. Drawn from a lyric in the title track, it centres on an imagined argument that comes too late.
The album also documents the beginning of a new recording approach for Sean. Influenced by techniques learned from Philip Weinrobe during a recording course taken while making the record, the sessions prioritised performance and improvisation over perfection. Often recorded live without headphones, against the backdrop of a busy London road, the album embraces happy accidents, exploratory takes, and the joy of making music with others.
