Spell Songs’ third studio album. In Thin Air, forms a musical companion piece to Robert and Jackie’s book The Book of Birds - a book that is a love letter to the splendours and mysteries of birdlife, and a clarion call to halt the loss of birds from land, sea and sky.
The music was created within the contemplative green oak roundhouse of Ty Sanctaidd (Sacred House) in the grounds of Ty Trefacwn in South West Wales, and recorded at Castle Sound Studio in Pencaitland, East Lothian. As with our other albums In Thin Air has been recorded and produced by Andy Bell of Hudson Records.
Throughout The Book of Birds there runs a gentle mantra – “Nest, Egg, Beak, Song, Feather, Flight, Migration — these are the Seven Wonders that together conjure the miracle of Bird”. Intrigued by this concept, the seven musicians have created an intricate new album that has an overarching narrative, capturing the remarkable world of birds from birth to flight.

A unique mixed media product, the Deluxe CD box includes CD, download code, hardback book, blackbird nest art card and specially commissioned fold out concertina style artwork of Jackie Morris’ ‘Blue Migration’.
Released on 4 September with limited early release available at Folk by the Oak Festival on Sunday 19 July (only available for purchase at the festival)

Blue Migration – Full Size, Hand-Signed and Numbered, Limited Edition Print
Prints of Jackie's specially commissioned original artwork for the CD concertina, in full size glory! Each of the 125 limited edition prints has been hand-signed and numbered by Jackie. This piece swirls with fresh, brackish air. The wave-like, hinted coastlines of the layered blues, the star specks and golden isobars all seem to suggest the birds’ flight visions, recalling lifetimes of migration memories. In Thin Air: Hand-signed Album Artwork Print
The title In Thin Air inspired the shell gold feather on the front cover, which delicately shines alone in an expanse of air, echoing the Fallen Feather song from the album. It just so happens that the feather that Jackie used in this artwork was itself a ‘fallen feather’ that she found hiding among artworks in her studio!
