‘Griogal Cridhe’ is a 16th-century Scottish Gaelic lament from Highland Perthshire. It was written by Marion Campbell, the widow of Gregor Ruadh MacGregor of Glenstrae, following his execution by beheading at Kenmore by Colin Campbell, 3rd laird of Glenorchy, in, 1570. There are several variants of the song, both lyrically and melodically; our version takes the form of a lullaby and is from the singing of Jessie MacKenzie of Sheshader, Lewis, who was recorded for the School of Scottish Studies in the 1950s.
