We learnt this classic Scots love song from the version recorded in the 1970s by Silly Wizard on that group's self-titled album. ‘Shearing’ in this case refers not to sheep, but to corn - it’s a harvest-time song. There’s some connection to the poem ‘When Autumn Comes’ by the 19th-century Scottish poet Robert Hogg, a nephew of the more well-known poet, novelist and anthologist James Hogg (aka ‘The Ettrick Shepherd’). Therefore some have attributed the song to Robert Hogg, but others, including Gavin Greig (the well-known song collector from the North-East of Scotland), have argued that the song predates Hogg, due to the variety found in oral tradition.
