Eliza Carthy & Jon Boden released their first duo album together in 2023 titled Glad Christmas Comes, a collection of their favourite traditional and non-trad festive songs. Christmas in the Carthy and Boden households is a serious business!
Eliza Carthy is one of the most recognisable faces in British folk, having received an MBE and multiple awards. Jon Boden, lead singer (and one of the principal arrangers) of Bellowhead, has become the stand out performer of his generation of traditional folk artists whose repertoire extends far beyond the boundaries of the genre.
Glad Christmas Comes was recorded in Sheffield in 2023. It features songs with Waterson: Carthy luminaries Emily Portman & Tim van Eyken, Morris dancing from Ewan Wardrop, Brass from Yorkshire’s own Backstage Brass and was produced by long time collaborator Andy Bell.
The 16-track album features traditional Sheffield carols Mount Zion and The Holly & The Ivy from Jon’s local pub in Dungworth, Sheffield, Winter Grace that was suggested to Eliza & Jon by Eliza’s Mum Norma whilst they rehearsed in the living room, a version of the Stanley Brothers Beautiful Star, a folky version of the Pogue’s Fairytale of New York featuring Morris dancing and the Christmas Hippopotamus even gets a look in.
